The Caribbean 2007

The Caribbean 2007

In early December 2007, Karen and I took a 10 day Caribbean cruise aboard the Holland American ship named the "Maasdam".

It sailed out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL with stops at St. Marteen, St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Tortola and the private Holland American owned island - Half Moon Cay.  The weather was superb on the islands, though we had some rough seas for part of the trip.  We love cruising as you get to see a lot a places without having to pack and unpack your bags and stay in different hotels every night.

It was on this trip where we were fortunate to be seated for dinner with three other couples - an elderly couple from Boston, a couple from Miami (refugees from Castro's Cuba in the late 1950's!) and a gregarious couple, about our age, from Arnhem, The Netherlands.  We quickly formed a deep bond with Thea and Ferdinand van der Gun and took several excursions together. We have since become best friends and have visited them twice in Holland/Europe, and they have been to the U.S. once to visit us - and will come again Spring of 2012.

Here are a Baker's Dozen photos for your enjoyment.

Wooden crafts for sale on St. Lucia.

Native with a BIG knife on St. Lucia - I waited until he passed by to take his photo!

Multi-colored boat.

Our fresh caught meal - a great cookout on board.  Holland America does a nice job of entertaining and catering to the desires of the cruisers.

Beautiful beach at Half Moon Cay.

Rainbow in the clouds !!

This lady greeted us off the ship at Bridgetown, Barbados with Caribbean music.  She sang very nicely (I think she was singing exclusively to me - see, she's looking right at me!) and was very colorfully dressed.
